Petition for action on climate change gets cross party backing

Ahead of the UN climate negotiations (COP21) in Paris at the end of this month, Wales MPs back a petition calling on the UK Government to provide strong leadership on climate action.

Hundreds of climate campaign signatures from Christian Aid supporters in Wales were handed over to No.10 Downing Street today, calling on the UK Government push for a science-based, fair and ambitious climate deal at the UN negotiations and for an increase support for poor countries to access low-carbon energy.  The Paris summit draws together world leaders to negotiate a new legally-binding universal agreement on climate change which will applicable to all countries.

Huw Thomas, Head of Christian Aid Wales said, “Our campaign on climate change has been backed by people from all over Wales and across the political spectrum, with people rightly concerned about the impact of global warming on their lives and the lives of the poorest people.  For 70 years Christian Aid has been fighting to make poverty history, but climate change threatens to make poverty permanent.”  Communities who have done the least to cause climate change are already on the sharp end of its effects.  Christian Aid’s global partners increasingly see that erratic weather is causing more storms and droughts, ruining harvests and threatening to undo development made over many years by poor communities.

With only a few weeks to go before the UN negotiations in Paris, current ambitions by the world’s wealthier nations are still too low and risk global warming of more than 3 degrees Celsius.  But it is not too late to see a more positive outcome for communities here in Wales and those already suffering from the effects of climate change across the world.

The coming weeks will see mass demonstrations across Europe and the world uniting civil society to raise a strong voice for a fair, strong and ambitious global climate deal in Paris. Christian Aid, along with members of the influential Stop Climate Chaos Cymru coalition, is also calling on individuals to join the Wales Climate Action Day in on the 28 November in Cardiff.
